Our Story

Our Story

Here Today.  Here Tomorrow.

Over 50 years ago, John A. Cooper opened his first planned community. His vision was simple but unswerving: Build places so appealing that families are attracted to them for generations to come.

This idea of permanence, of building something that lasts for generations, has directed Cooper Communities, Inc.since its founding in 1954.

John A. Cooper, Sr. cared for these communities, nurturing them into appealing places to live and raise families. It is only fitting that this family-oriented business ethic would be passed along to his own family members.  John A. Cooper, III, representing the third generation of the Cooper family, is now at the helm of the company..

Today, our nine developments offer families an exceptional, fun lifestyle surrounded by everything that makes a community whole. More than 95,000 acres have been developed and includes more than 26,000 homes.  This figure increases by more than 1,300 new home annually, ensuring continued growth and prosperity..

Family. Generations. Permanence. These are the promises and passions we bring to each new development.

Today more than 100,000 families own property in one of the nine Cooper Communities.

Why have they bought property from us? For several very important reasons. First is our outstanding reputation. We are widely recognized as one of the most fiscally responsible developers of planned communities in the nation. That means property owners can count on very high quality amenities now - and in the future. Next is our environmental concern. Fully 17 to 30% of the land in each Cooper Community is set aside as unspoiled common property. As a result, Cooper Communities feature lush, wooded landscapes and lots of strikingly beautiful scenery.

Another reason people are so attracted to Cooper Communities is because of our ideal locations. From Arkansas and Tennessee to Missouri, West Virginia, and South Carolina, we've chosen sites that are all within the vicinity to attractions like national parks, world-class entertainment, top-flight shopping and more. And, since our villages are all in the Midwest and the South, the climate is usually just right - not too hot, and not too cold!

Sure, Cooper Communities’ villages have all the golf, tennis, boating and fishing you could ask for, but we've designed our communities to be more than that. They're places with real neighborhoods, where people raise families, and where every generation really can find a place to call home... all nestled in some of nature's most beautiful spaces.

John Cooper began to imagine a new way of life while visiting his family's favorite spot near Hardy, Arkansas. Surrounded by rushing streams and beautiful scenery, the visionary founder of our company started to think about how to make it possible for families to enjoy a life that was both relaxing and invigorating, not just at vacation time, but all year round.

Mr. Cooper realized his dream not far from that very spot, with his first community, called Cherokee Village. Today, Cooper Land Development is one of the most established and well-respected community builders in the country, with nine communities ranging from 365 to 36,000 acres in size. We've crafted dozens of golf courses and lakes into our landscapes, and we've built millions of dollars worth of recreational amenities. More than 100,000 families are now part of a Cooper community.

Every Cooper community is located in a beautiful area, abounding with recreational opportunities. We respect the land. In fact, 17 to 30 percent of the land is set aside for unspoiled common property.

Every Cooper community is an example of John Cooper's dream, still being pursued after more than 55 years.
